Abstract: A lot is known about innovation – insofar as it is
possible to "know” a complex and uncertain phenomenon like innovation.
In considering the dynamics of technical production and institutional
ecologies, it has been useful to emphasize their vicissitudes by
speaking of "innovation journeys." This seminar by Arie Rip will take
another step by showing that that there are general patterns and
structures in the context of innovation journeys, over and above the
specific constellation of actors or the framework conditions at play in
any particular innovation pathway. Professor Rip will address the ways
in which cultural niches (i.e. protected spaces),
socio-technical regimes (i.e. sets of rules for further development of a
technology), and technoscientifc “landscapes” constitute a persistent
backdrop of opportunities and constraints that shape the directionality
of innovation journeys.
Two manuscripts by Professor Rip concerning "innovation
journeys" are available for download (here and here) as background reading for the
discussion.
