A Mind of Winter
Abou Farman

An illustrated reading/performance about the fear of not dying, hitting the pause button on life, suspended animation, cryonics, Wallace Stevens' Snowman, and the experience of freezing an old man's head who, as a result, may still be potentially alive. Or, at any rate, not quite dead. Maybe just settling into those non-existent moments that are neither life nor death.

Abou Farman is a writer, artist and anthropologist completing his PhD at the Graduate Center, CUNY. His writing has appeared in academic journals, magazines and newspapers including Canadian Ethnic Studies, Anthropology Now, History and Anthropology, Transition, The Globe & Mail, Books in Canada, The Believer, The Huffington Post, Bidoun, and The Utne Review. He has been nominated for two National Magazine Awards in Canada and has twice won the Critics Desk Award from Arc, Canada's National Poetry Magazine. As part of the duo caraballo-farman, he has exhibited installation and video art at the Tate Modern, UK, PS1/MOMA, NY, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, and the Havana Bienial amongst others, and has been the recipient of several grants including a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship.

The room is 1246 SSH (aka Deathstar), easiest way to find it is to enter the parking lot between Young & SSH off A St. At the end of the parking lot turn right and walk between two buildings. Off to your left is a sliding glass door. 1246 is inside to your left.
